POOR RESULTS IN REPORT BOOK
POOR RESULTS IN SCHOOL

HOW TO HANDLE THE SITUATION
when a child shows you his disappointing result book:

1. Keep your cool. Let the child know that his result was disappointing and
that you will take the time to talk about it when you have had the chance
to calm down.

2. Don't lose your temper. A bad report card is a "wake-up call" for your
child, showing him/her that they need to put in more effort into his/her
school work.

3. Use the report booklet to help your child to solve the problem and together
come to an agreement on how to improve his results for the next examination.

WHAT TO DO

1. Compliment your child for his/her effort in his/her work.
2. Compliment your child's strengths, even if they are unrelated to school;
instead of emphasizing too much on his/her weaknesses.
3. Keep your own expectations at a realistic level.
4. Help your child to identify his/her own goals, not your own.
5. Allow your child to try things out on his/her own and provide him/her the opportunity to solve his/her problems.
6. Help your child to evaluate his/her own behaviour and help him/her realize how his/her behaviour affects his/her attempt in achieving their goals.
7. Accept mistakes and let your child know that it is alright to make mistakes but he/she should learn from these mistakes.
8. Teach them effective learning skills such as association.
9. Show an interest in their school work.
10. Provide them with a quiet place and interesting reference books on the
subjects which they do poorly in.
